The NYLT Leadership Academy has long been a program for premier leaders in the Boy Scouts of America, and has focused on the fundamental skills of instruction and evaluation as a way to build strong leaders and teachers. This summer that program takes the next step in delivering an exceptional program through a partnership with West Virginia University!
ORGL293A: Youth Leadership Experience
The NYLT Leadership Academy is now pleased to announce that through this partnership we will offer high school students a 1-credit course for college credit. Taught and administered by educational professionals, this course enables participants to deepen their understanding of leadership skills and concepts, and apply them in a collegiate setting. Most of the activities in the course will be completed through the NYLT Leadership Academy program, with additional required reading and reflection before and after the course. Participants should expect an additional 5-10 hours of work outside of the 50+ hours of instruction at the Leadership Academy, but will leave the course with college credit that can be transferred to any collegiate institution across the country.
For 15 years the NYLT Leadership Academy has been the premier course developing youth as outstanding leadership instructors and leaders of their home council NYLT courses. Now we are expanding the role of the Leadership Academy by making the course available to all NYLT graduates who want to become high level leaders and teachers of leadership. Our partnership with West Virginia University adds academic rigor to the time-proven methodology of Scouting resulting in an unequaled leadership learning experience. Like other advanced placement high school courses, youth can earn college credit. This is a unique experience that should not be missed, sign up your youth today!
– Gary Schroeder, Chair, NYLT Leadership Academy
Registration in the WVU/NYLT Leadership Academy college credit program will be an additional step in the registration process, and will cost an additional $25. Once registered, students will be enrolled in the course and receive instructions for accessing the required readings and starting the college credit program. Rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are all eligible to participate in the program.
The WVU College of Chambers of Business and Economics is excited to create an academic class through our high school access program that provides academic credit for the NYLT Leadership Academy. Emerging leaders in the BSA will complete academic course work that aligns with the experience at the Leadership Academy. The material will explore leadership theories and have students reflect on their own leadership fundamentals.
– Dr. Jeffrey Houghton, Professor of Management and Coordinator, Organizational Leadership Program, West Virginia University.
The NYLT Leadership Academy is now open to any Scout who has completed National Youth Leadership Training at their home council. Completing NYLT is a prerequisite to attend the Leadership Academy. Many Leadership Academy graduates serve as youth staff in their home councils, but this is no longer a requirement to attend.
The NYLT Leadership Academy hopes to offer additional programs for credit in the future, and you should stay tuned as we deepen our partnership with WVU. We look forward to working with you this summer!
