The NYLT Leadership Academy has long been a program for premier leaders in the Boy Scouts of America, and has focused on the fundamental skills of instruction and evaluation as a way to build strong leaders and teachers. Through our partnership with West Virginia University the NYLT Leadership Academy deepens its roots in delivering an academically rigorously leadership development program for youth across the United States.

Sequence
First attend NYLT in your home council.
Then attend the NYLT Leadership Academy and optionally include 1 college credit
Finally attend Leadership Academy II for 2 additional college credits (separate course week)

Are you interested in engaging with Leadership Academy while earning one college credit, transferrable to institutions across the country? Signing up for the Leadership Academy/West Virginia partnership course is a guaranteed way to make sure you maximize your leadership learning this summer. Students enrolled in the course will have to do up to 4 hours of pre-work and post-work, as well as write reflections and complete short written assignments throughout their time at the Leadership Academy. They will meet with their instructor online and receive feedback on their leadership learning. This program is open to rising Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors in high school.
In order to apply to receive college credit for taking the NYLT Leadership Academy through West Virginia University, you must meet the following requirements:
- Be a high school or home-schooled Sophomore, Junior or Senior during the semester when the desired course is offered.
- Home-schooled students must submit their academic transcripts.
- Hold a 3.0 GPA or higher.
- Obtain parent/guardian permission (their signature is required on the Enrollment Authorization Form.)

Please Note: Senior students who are officially graduating from high school (whether in May or June) would not be eligible to obtain college credit for attending the NYLT Leadership Academy program during the Summer months before they become undergraduate freshman.

The textbook for both college credit courses is the Student Leadership Challenge by James Kouzes and Barry Posner. In the book Kouzes and Posner apply their extensive research and expertise to demonstrate that anyone can be a leader, regardless of age or experience. They challenge high school and undergraduate college students to examine their own leadership actions and aspirations. Do I need to take NYLT Leadership Academy and the 1-credit Leadership Academy 1 course before taking Leadership Academy II?
Yes, NYLT Leadership Academy and the 1-credit college level course Leadership Academy I are required prerequisites to participate in Leadership Academy II.
What’s the difference between the 1-credit and 2-credit college level courses?
The 1-credit college course focuses on teaching leadership and early chapters in “The Student Leadership Challenge” textbook. During Leadership Academy II scouts will dive deeper into leadership exploration and apply what they’ve learned from the textbook into practice.
Do I need to pay extra for the college credit courses?
Yes. Each of the 1-credit Leadership Academy I and 2-credit Leadership Academy II courses require an additional $25 fee and application through West Virginia University. For more information on how to apply, click here.
When can I take the 1-credit and 2-credit college courses?
The 1-credit college credit course can be completed at any of the NYLT Leadership Academy course locations.
For each of the college credit courses, Scouts will just need to pay an additional $25 fee and submit an application to West Virginia University’s High School Access program.
Can I take 1-credit and 2-credit courses at the same time?
Unfortunately, both of these courses are unique experiences and cannot happen concurrently. Leadership Academy I is a prerequisite to take Leadership Academy II.
Is the course in person or online?
All of our courses take place in person.
